Business Tax Certificate
Working from home still counts
Businesses operating within the City of San Diego generally need a Business Tax Certificate, including self-employed people and independent contractors. A home office does not automatically put you outside the rules.
We help you identify the registration and renewal questions to address alongside your business return.

An Airbnb listing is only the start
Renting a San Diego property for stays of less than one month brings Transient Occupancy Tax requirements into the picture. Short-Term Residential Occupancy licensing is a separate requirement.
We review rental records and city tax reporting. Check the city's licensing requirements before accepting bookings.

Check Rental Unit Business Tax
The City of San Diego imposes an annual Rental Unit Business Tax on residential rental activity. Reporting rent on your income tax return does not replace that local requirement.
Tell us if you have started renting out a house, condo or ADU, or changed how an existing property is used.

A San Diego County address is not enough
A business in Chula Vista, Carlsbad or an unincorporated part of the county needs its own local review. Do not assume the City of San Diego's registrations cover your location.
Start with the property or business address, the activity and where you operate. We can then identify the tax questions that need attention.
